| The Washington Post reported this week that deportations have risen markedly over the past two yearsCustoms Enforcement (ICE) expecting to deport about 400,00 people in 2010. Given the fear and confusion bound up in the deportation process, Appleseed has been working to protect the financial and family rights of deportees, many of whom are not aware these rights even exist. |

| New Uniform Law Protects Family Land |

The adoption today of a proposed uniform state law aimed at preserving home ownership for vulnerable families marks a crucial step in helping low-wealth and minority communities nationwide retain their family property. Appleseed currently has teams of pro bono attorneys comparing the uniform law to current state law, and along with several Appleseed Centers, we will now begin advocating for adoption in all states.

| Volunteer Lawyers Help 350 Consumer Debt Defendants |

New York Appleseed recently expanded the highly successful Volunteer Lawyer for the Day project to Queens in partnership with the New York State Courts Access to Justice Program and with funding from the ACE Rule of Law Fund. Since the inception of the Queens program in May 2010, attorneys and law students have represented defendants in more than 60 consumercredit cases, providing legal counsel to defendants who would otherwise have none.

| Remittance Transparency Included in House-Senate Agreement on Financial Reform |

With Congressional agreement on financial reform legislation, Appleseed's Fair Exchange principles are now much closer to implementation in the remittance market. The legislation includes important transparency requirements for remittance service providers that will help guarantee the safe and affordable transfer of money from immigrant workers to their relatives abroad.
